James Schultz, a sophomore at Black Hawk East, Kewanee, was a double gold metal winner for the second consecutive time during the Black Hawk Intercollegiate Western Horse Show, held Feb. 25 and 26. In November, Schultz was the only participate at Black Hawk who won a set of double gold medals, and again achieved that success during this competition event.
Schultz is the son of Bob and Mindi Schultz, Viola, and the grandson of Gary and Sharon Esslinger, Viola.
Ten colleges and universities in competition were Augustana, Black Hawk College, Illinois State University, Iowa State University,
Lake Forest College, Missouri State University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University, Truman State University and Western Illinois University.
Forty-two students from Black Hawk Equine Show Team participated in the weekend event, with Drew Cotton and Donna Irvin, coaches.
Judging Saturday’s competition was Dan Williams of Ashland, Illinois and on Sunday, Kendra Weis, Moberly, Mo.
On Saturday, Black Hawk East took first place with 37 points, Missouri State and Truman State tying for second place with 11 points each. Black Hawk East students Carrie Somerville of Onslow, Iowa was named high point open rider with 12 points and Reserve High Point Open Rider, Josh Clevenger, Mr. Olive, with 11 points.
On Sunday, Black Hawk East again took first place with 22 points, and Illinois State University second place with 14 points. Carrie Somerville was once again named as high point open rider, with Brice Howell, Kokomo, Ind., earning reserve high point open rider.
Also Black Hawk Show Team members winning two classes during this weekend competition were Freshman, Tiarra Paschall of Rushville in the Intermediate II division, and Carrie Somerville in the Reining and Open Class divisions.
Black Hawk College East Show Team will now advance to Regional Competition at Missouri State, Springfield, Mo. on Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4. If the show team qualifies, the team and qualifying individual contestants will then advance to the Semi-Final competitions in Harrington, Del., March 26 and 27, and to the finals May 3-6 in Raleigh, N.C.
