  • Secretary of State Jesse White  has announced that the Mercer Carnegie Library of Aledo is one of 63 Illinois public libraries to receive a 2012 “Business and Libraries: Working Together” grant.  Packages awarded include books to help businesses and entrepreneurs in their communities create new economic growth opportunities. Each of the 63 libraries will receive  a collection of business related books totaling approximately $1,000.

Public libraries are cornerstones of the community. Working with local businesses, public libraries have the potential to spur economic development and job creation. The  “Business and Libraries: Working Together” grants offers public libraries the opportunity to receive information resources that will help local businesses create new economic growth possibilities. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the State Library will provide qualifying public libraries with materials to be available for check out. No matching funds are required.

Participating libraries  were selected on the basis of the local unemployment rate, poverty level, proximity to a Small Business Development Center (SBDC), SCORE or other business organization, and statewide geographic distribution.

The Small Business Start-Up Kit includes the titles "The E-Myth Enterprise", "The Wall Street Journal Complete Small Business Guidebook", "Profits Aren't Everything, They're the Only Thing", "The Small Business Bible: Everything You Need to Know to Succeed in Your Small Business. 2nd ed.", "Small Business and the Public Library: Strategies for a Successful Partnership" and
The American Bar Association legal guide for small business", with more materials to be announced. The Mercer Carnegie Library expects to begin receiving the materials in April 2012.
