  • The Mercer County Farm Bureau Women's Committee donated 40 Easter hams to the Churches of Mercer County Food Pantry on April 3. The donation was made possible by a $250 grant from the Illinois Corn Marketing Board. The Women's Committee also volunteered their time at the Food Pantry the evening of April 3.
The Women's Committee decided to use the grant funds to donate hams to help the less fortunate and to illustrate the fact that using corn to feed livestock such as cattle, pigs, and poultry is the most efficient and "green" way to feed livestock in Illinois. Feeding corn allows animals to gain weight quickly for accelerated growth and as a result reduces the cost of delicious, protein packed meat for the consumer. The efficient use of corn to feed our livestock helps to create more bountiful meals for America's consumers.
