Explosions of applause erupted throughout opening night of the world premiere of The Nutty Professor directed by Jerry Lewis. Two Aledo women, Deb Bowen and Lori Boruff, attended the Rupert Holmes-Marvin Hamlisch musical at Nashville's James K. Polk Theater on July 25 i n Nashville, Tennessee.
“I was curious how they could pull off creating a musical from The Nutty Professor,” said Boruff, “but they did a fantastic job combining classic comedy with lasting lyrics and a cast ready for Broadway.”
Of course that is Lewis' vision—Broadway. He hand picked multiple Tony and Oscar winner Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line) and Rupert Holmes, a three-time Tony Award winner (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) to transform a nutty script into entertainment.
Former Rockridge graduate and niece of Bowen, Mindy Powell Hardy of Adams, Tennessee, secured VIP tickets for the trio to attend the 1963 Jerry Lewis film comedy first ever musical production.
“Jerry entered the stage following the performance and gave us a split-second glimpse of younger Lewis we all remember,” commented Boruff.
But who can play Lewis' quirky character? Michael Andrew played Julius Kelp, who concocts a formula changing himself from geeky to gorgeous Buddy Love. Andrew perfectly played the nutty professor leaving 86-year-old Lewis thrilled, calling Michael one of the best talents to come down the pike in 50 years.
According to Los Angeles Times Entertainment, Andrew is a singer who has appeared on Lewis' Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy telethons.
That trip down Jerry Lewis memory lane moved the two Aledo women to participate in the Aledo 2012 Lock Up benefit for the ILLOWA Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Boruff and Bowen have been charged with having big hearts and will be locked up around noon Sept. 12, 2012 at Aledo Happy Joes. They hope to raise bail, break free and make a difference to those fighting muscle disease.
