  • Louis D. Wagner, 81, passed away Monday evening, Aug. 13, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals.

  • Louis D. Wagner, 81, passed away Monday evening, Aug. 13, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals. Louis was diagnosed in 2007 with MDS (RC-MD). He fought long and hard to live for his wife of 61 years, Gertrude Wagner. Louis Duane and Gertrude Eileen Lockmiller were married on July 27, 1951. Louis is survived by Gertrude, their son Larry (Nancy) and their daughter Miriam (Howard) Hedlund, Granddaughter Jenna Wagner, Grandson Wesley (Heather) Wagner and Great-grandsons, Colton, Dagan and Myles Wagner. Also surviving are his sisters: Marcelia Ripley, Mary Ann Trudell; and brothers: Wendall (Kil Sun) Wagner and Dwight (Susie) Wagner.
    Louis was born April 23, 1931, the oldest child of August Louis and Eunice Easter (Allen) Wagner. As was his father, Louis was born on the family farm in Eliza Township, where son Larry (Nancy) still lives. From November of 1952 to October of 1953, Louis served his country in the Korean Conflict, as a Master Sergeant, earning The Bronze Star Medal, as Chief of Firing Battery. Louis attended the University of Illinois earning a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked for Weirton Steel, Campbell Soup Co., and The U.S Army as a civilian employee. Louis retired in 1992, taking trips with his wife and grandchildren throughout the U.S.A. and Canada. In 1977, the Wagner's moved from Savanna to their current home in Joy.
    Mr. Wagner was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers Carl and August Richard (Dick) Wagner.
    Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, Muscatine, Iowa. Visitation was at 10 a.m., followed by a luncheon at 11 a.m., and the service at noon, all at the funeral home. Immediately following the service, there was a procession to the Rock Island Arsenal for a graveside farewell with full military honors.
