  • Doris Domeij Smith, born July 14, 1920 in Valley City North Dakota, daughter of Pastor O.F. Domeij, minister of Messiah Lutheran Church, Aledo, Illinois for 25 years, went to her heavenly reward on August 15, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Florida Lutheran Health Center in Deland, Florida.
    Doris and her husband, Dr. Robert Smith, were both graduates of Aledo High School, class of 1938. Doris graduated from Augustana College in 1942.
    Doris and Bob, who have spent the past 10 years as independent residents of the Lutheran retirement community in DeLand Florida, enjoyed almost 70 years of marriage in many areas of the country. Statesville Wisconsin, New Orleans Louisiana, Anchorage Alaska, Washington D.C., Battle Creek Michigan, and San Francisco California – wherever Bob was assigned by the U.S. Public Health Service until his retirement to Morgantown, West Virginia in 1969, where he held positions with the health program of the United Mine Workers and, ultimately, was on the faculty of the West Virginia University School of Medicine. Doris was always eager to move to new areas.
    Doris was a 60 year member of PEO, a philanthropic educational organization that helps deserving women to further their education. She belonged to five different PEO chapters, in Anchorage Alaska, Redwood City California, Falls Church Virginia, Morgantown West Virginia, and New Smyrna Beach Florida. In each of the communities Doris and Bob lived, they were active in the Lutheran church.
    She is predeceased by daughter Leslie and grandchildren Jesse Smith and MacKenzie Gilbert. Survivors are her husband in Deland, Florida and four children: Steven, a counselor at the Betty Ford Center in Palm Desert, California; Martin, employed by J. P. Morgan Chase bank headquarters in Columbus, Ohio; Julia, manager of board relations at the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, California, and Melanie Johnson of 221 E. Washington St., Lewisburg, West Virginia 24901, where Dr. Smith is temporarily residing. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, brothers Don Domeij of Littleton MA and Verne Carroll, and Jean Carroll Johnson of Browns Mills, New Jersey. Doris learned of her full blood siblings Jean and Verne at the age of 80 and cherished those relationships.
