  • A 1 ½-mile freedom walk honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at the American Legion, 515 W. 1st Ave., Milan.
Post Adjutant Norman Dunlap said the 1 ½-mile route was chosen because the steps to cover that distance roughly equate to the number of people killed in the attacks. There is no rain date for the Freedom Walk, he said. "The people who died that day at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, or aboard the hijacked planes didn't have a choice. And although we have a choice, we will walk -- rain-or-shine -- to remember their fate."
A flag containing the names of the people killed in the attacks will be on display.
Walkers and activity participants will gather in front of the Post. Following brief comments, Legion members will lead the walkers on the trek along the paved Hennepin Canal walkway. Pre-registration is not required.
The family-oriented public event is open to men, women and children. A light lunch and entertainment by the Quad-City Ukulele Club will follow the walk. There is no charge, but free-will donations to help defray the cost of the meal will be appreciated.
