  • Black Hawk College has been named a 2013 Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine.
The designation honors the top 15 percent of U.S. colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.
The 2013 list includes more than 1,700 schools. More than 12,000 Veterans Administration-approved schools were considered.
Serving veterans is not a new mission for Black Hawk College.
When the college conducted its first classes in September 1946, 73 percent of the 239 students were World War II veterans.
"What better way to link what we're doing today with where we started?" Dr. Baynum said. "We're still serving veterans in 2012."
This semester, there are 174 veterans enrolled at Black Hawk College.
The Military Friendly Schools list is determined through exhaustive research by the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Schools team. This research includes government agencies and private entities which administer education benefits and a comprehensive survey administered by G.I. Jobs. A Military Friendly Schools Academic Advisory Board helps determine survey questions and weightings.
Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings.
Black Hawk College was designated a Military Friendly School in 2011 and 2012.
