  • United fends off Golden Eagles

  • The United Red Storm beat Mercer County 25-20 and 25-15 on Tuesday night spoiling senior night for the Golden Eagles.

  • The United Red Storm beat Mercer County 25-20 and 25-15 on Tuesday night spoiling senior night for the Golden Eagles.
     
    "I think both teams played really well," said United head coach Carrie Boone. "Our girls did a good duo."
    Boone added, "You can tell they are having a good year. It's their home gym and this place was rocking. They've gotten better since the last time we played them."
    Mercer County head coach Amy Degelman said, "I think we played better than the first time we played them. It was senior night tonight and I think that helped. This whole group of 15 has been a coach's dream for my first year." They work hard, are a tight knit group. The seniors did an excellent job tonight. The mesh well. I'm really going to miss this senior group."
     
    United broke out to a 4-1 lead to start the game as Michelle Ravel put away a pair of kills.
    The Golden Eagles got a pair of aces fro Bree Weeks to knot the score at 5-5.
    The two teams fought back and forth over the next part of the match. Neither team led by more than a point until Ravel scored United's 15th point giving them a 15-13 advantage.
    A couple of kills from Brooke Nelson kept the Golden Eagles alive and they tied the score at 19-19 forcing United to call a timeout.
    Mercer County led briefly at 20-19 on a Maci Zimmerman kill but United timed the match on a k ill by Meghan Perkins. United's Jenn Price scored the last five points of the match to give the Red Storm the victory in Game 1.
    United broke out to a 5-1 lead in the second game only to watch the Golden Eagles bounce back to tie the score at 8-8.
    United took the initiative and edged out to a 16-12 lead forcing Mercer County to call a timeout.
    Michaela Baker's kill trimmed the United lead to 20-15 but United Andi Hendrix scored the final five points to put the game away.
     
    Brooke Nelson led Mercer County with four kills while Bree Weeks added three more. Maggy Terrill had 11 assists. Kim Nelson led the Golden Eagles in digs with 12 while Savanah Frieden added four. Bree Weeks also had two aces.
    Michelle Ravel led the Red Storm in kills with 10 while Jenn Price added seven and Meghan Perkins four. Brea Simpkins led United in assists with 12. Andi Hendrix led United in digs with 14 while Ravel and Simkins adds seven apiece. Price had two aces while Ravel and Perkins had one apiece.
