Illinois State Police District 7 Commander, Lieutenant Robert Atherton announces the return of Illinois State Police Motorcycle patrols on local roadways and interstates in Rock Island, Henry, Knox, and Mercer counties.
“Traffic enforcement from the motorcycle unit provides a unique approach to observing traffic violations,” states Lieutenant Robert Atherton. The motorcycle patrols will be implemented through the remainder of this year depending upon the weather. “The focus of the motorcycle unit will be enforcement of speed, occupant restraint, and impaired and distracted driving violations.” added Lieutenant Atherton. “Our goal is to reduce crashes that are due to unsafe driving behaviors.”
This year in District 7, 50% of the individuals killed in vehicular crashes were not wearing a seat belt; 38% of the fatal crashes have involved an impaired driver; and 15% of the fatal crashes were attributed to distracted driving. Lieutenant Atherton concluded, “The Illinois State Police commitment towards highway safety remains a priority. Fewer crashes should equate to fewer injuries or deaths.”
