Kenneth L. Hughes, 90, of New Windsor, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 at the Mercer County Nursing Home in Aledo. Graveside services are 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in New Windsor. Visitation was 4-7 p.m., Friday at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Alpha where memorials may be left to the American Red Cross or the New Kingdom Trail Riders. He was born April 19, 1922 in Griffin, to Roy and Ada Young Hughes. He attended the local schools and married Colleen Lynn Dec. 30, 1944 in New Windsor.
Kenney was a lifetime livestock farmer. He owned and raised world class Standard Bred race horses. He owned and raised the record holding two year old trotter horse racing champion; a record that he held for 12 years.
He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in New Windsor, United States Trotting Association, Illinois Harness Horseman’s Association and Mercer County Farm Bureau.
He enjoyed reading and trail riding.
Survivors include his wife: Colleen; three daughters: Laurel Hughes and Connie Bina both of Rock Island; Jean (Lonnie) Daves of Sherrard; one son: Grant Hughes of New Windsor; six grandchildren; one sister: Norma Hines of Novato, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
His parents; two sisters: Donna Bollbach and Laurel Lindgren preceded him in death.
