  • The Mercer County Golden Eagles girls basketball team defeated Stark County, 66-43 Wednesday night.

    Golden Eagle head coach Steve Moseley noted the team was missing its lock-down defender in Baily Swanson who has been ill. "We'
    We've had a lot of illness," said Moseley. "I don't think we've had the full team at a practice since Dec. 1. This is Kristin Heath's first game back from a long illness, and we're not that deep anyway. We don't have then numbers."
    Moseley said, "I thought defensively we did some good things tonight."
    Moseley said the team did win a couple of games at the Rockridge tourney over the weekend and held Morrison to five points in the second half.
    "The girls are starting to understand their roles," said Moseley. "We are still a relatively young team. We are starting three juniors and a sophomore."
    Moseley added, "We hope to get everybody healthy. The girls continue to play hard for me. I'm proud of them. Michaela Baker stepped up for us tonight. Bridget is starting to average double figures and that give us another scoring threat."
    Stark County jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and never really looked back. they led 15-5 at the end of the first quarter. Madison Paxson delivered inside for the Rebels scoring 11 points in the opening period.
    Bridget Anderson and Baker started the second quarter with a pair of baskets to cut the Rebel lead to 15-9 early on.
    The Rebels responded with a 15-0 run Elizabeth Hippen hit a pair of three pointers outside while Samantha Roth gave the Rebels a scoring threat inside.
    Following a Mercer County timeout at 2:01, the Golden Eagles outscored the Rebels 8-4 to close out the first half. Baker hit a pair of three pointers to end the period.
    Stark County led 34-17 at the half.
    The Rebels outscored Mercer County 20-11 in the third period and led 54-28 after three quarters.
    The Golden Eagles did score the last three points in the period on a three pointer by Anderson.
    The Rebels went on a 7-0 scoring run to start the fourth period. The Golden Eagles built momentum in the final minutes outscoring the Rebels 15-5. Baker scored 10 points in the final period to lead the Golden Eagle run.
    Baker led all scorers with 26 points while teammates Kristin HEath and Bridget Anderson added vive apiece.
    Madison Paxson led Stark County with 24 points while Ashley Phillips chipped in with 13.
