Thunderstorm chances will be on the iincrease over the next 24-48 hours. Concerned about some heavy storms on Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. Monitor updates.

This forecast analysis covers far southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee

HEADLINES: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be in the forecast over the next 24-48 hours. The main focus for the heaviest weather will be Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

A squall line will develop on Tuesday afternoon from Illinois down into Missouri. This line of thunderstorms will move east/northeast on Tuesday evening.

There remain some questions on timing. If the front stalls out a bit then the timing into western Kentucky and western Tennessee will be a bit later on Tuesday night.

There will be a risk for a few severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes.

Rain and storms will come to an end by Wednesday morning. Some snow showers will be possible in the colder air behind the cold front.

A weak system may move through the area on Thursday. This may spark some snow or snow showers. Confidence is low right now on that part of the forecast.

Rainfall totals from Sunday through Tuesday night should be in the 0.75"-1.50" range. Locally heavy rain will be possible with thunderstorms.

Monitor forecasts on Tuesday. A chance for a few severe thunderstorms.

Snow showers on Wednesday and Thursday will be the wild card in this forecast. If moisture lingers long enough on Wednesday then some snow can't be ruled out over parts of the area (more north than south).

Another weak system on Thursday/Thursday night could spark some snow showers.

The forecast for severe or extreme weather

The McCracken County Office of Emergency Management reminds you that owning a NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio is the best way to receive notifications of severe weather watches and warnings.

Remember that the National Weather Service defines a severe thunderstorm as one that produces 58 mph winds or higher, hail 1" in size or larger, and/or a tornado.

Monday: Severe weather is not anticipated. No snow or ice.

Tuesday: A few severe thunderstorms possible - especially Tuesday night. No snow or ice.
