  • GALESBURG—The following events are part of this year’s The Big Read, which celebrates the classic Ray Bradbury novel “Fahrenheit 451.” The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest and is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Big Read provides communities nationwide with the opportunity to read, discuss and celebrate one of 31 selections from U.S. and world literature.     APRIL 9
    1 p.m.
    “Fahrenheit 451” Book Discussion — Galesburg Public Library, 40 E. Simmons St.
    Free copies of the book are available at the checkout desk at the Galesburg Public Library.
     
    2 p.m.
    “Fahrenheit 451” Movie Screening — Galesburg Public Library, 40 E. Simmons St.
    View a free showing of the film adaptation of “Fahrenheit 451.” Popcorn and drinks will be provided.
     
    4:30 p.m.
    Lego Night: Robots — Galesburg Public Library 40 E. Simmons St.
    Kids of all ages are invited to the Hiler Room to make mechanical hounds and other futuristic critters inspired by “Fahrenheit 451.”

    “Fahrenheit 451” Book Discussion — Kresge Hall, Knox College
    Free copies of the book are available at the checkout desk at the Galesburg Public Library.
     
    7 p.m.
    Bradbury Biographer Sam Weller — Kresge Hall, Knox College
    The Galesburg Public Library and Knox College library present Sam Weller, author of “Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury,” “Listen to the Echoes: The Ray Bradbury Interviews” and the newly released “Shadow Show: All-New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury.” Free and open to the public. Copies of Weller’s books will be on sale while supplies last.

    Give new life to old books during this free-form art and craft session. You bring the creativity, and we’ll supply the tools, books and embellishments. Free and open to all ages. Registration is encouraged but not required.

    Refreshments will be served, and winners will have an opportunity to read their entries. Free and open to the public.
     
    The Galesburg-area celebration of The Big Read is part of the Sandburg Days festival for the mind, which will take place April 17-20 in Galesburg. Sandburg Days festival for the mind honors Galesburg-born, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Lincoln biographer Carl Sandburg and his family by celebrating with the community through educational and recreational activities.
