  • State Rep. Pat Verschoore, D-Milan, recently sponsored House Bill 71, legislation that will penalize those who help others fraudulently obtain medical benefits.
“The most vulnerable citizens, like seniors and those with disabilities, need our help to ensure they are not taken advantage of,” Verschoore said. “This bill makes sure that everyone involved in fraudulent activities is held responsible.”
House Bill 71 changes the law to allow those who help or plan on helping others fraudulently obtain public medical benefits to be charged with a misdemeanor or felony, depending on the amount of benefits involved. This bill adds that any person, vendor, organization, agency or other entity that knowingly helps someone else obtain unauthorized public medical benefits can be charged as well. Currently, only the person who knowingly obtains unauthorized public medical benefits can be charged. House Bill 71 passed through the House of Representatives with unanimous support.
“Con-artists and those who defraud the Medicaid system should not be able to avoid liability” Verschoore said. “This is a strong step toward increasing consumer protections and decreasing Medicaid abuse in Illinois.”
