Genesis Medical Center, Aledo and the Mercer Foundation for Health are pleased to announce the renovation of GMC, Aledo is set to begin. A ground breaking ceremony is planned for Wednesday, June 26 to celebrate the $12,000,000 project to renovate and modernize the hospital.
“Because of the vision and support of people in the region, especially the Mercer Foundation for Health, Genesis Medical Center, Aledo has a bright future,’’ said Doug Cropper, President and CEO, Genesis Health System.
As an Illinois critical access hospital, the renovation is vital to meet the health and wellness needs of the community. The renovation will upgrade the infrastructure, enhance medical technology and expand outpatient services to meet required safety standards and improve patient care.
The 18-month renovation will have an economic impact of more than $25,000,000 to the community through the addition of construction jobs and the capital expenditures with the building project. The renovation will be completed in three phases and allow all services to continue operations during renovation.
• The first phase will include establishing a new entrance and centralized patient registration area, located at the front of the hospital. All patient rooms will also be updated, this phase is expected to be completed in seven months.
• In the second phase, Emergency Room and Surgery will be renovated and expanded to accommodate growth and advancement in medical technology. This phase is expected to be completed in five months.
• The final phase will be completed in six months with the renovation and expansion of the Radiology, Laboratory and Physical Therapy.
The partnership between Mercer County Hospital and Genesis Health System began in 2009 under a management agreement to oversee daily operations. Mercer County Nursing Home secured a management agreement with Genesis Health System in 2011. After a successful referendum in 2012, the Mercer County Board approved the sale of the facilities to Genesis. Mercer County Hospital was acquired by Genesis Health System on February 1, 2013.
Genesis has introduced new and expanded services to the hospital, including expanded surgical options, additional specialists available in the community, sleep medicine, and chemotherapy.
Ted Rogalski, administrator of Genesis Medical Center, Aledo, said the goal for the medical center is to allow patients to receive as much care as possible close to home.
"In a rural area, the availability of acute, chronic, and specialized care is vital to meet the health care needs of the community. We have many new and exciting opportunities for growth and we will continue to bring needed health services and specialists to our community," said Rogalski.
Community Support Mercer Foundation for Health has played a vital role in the renovation of the hospital by launching a successful capital campaign in 2008, raising over $800,000. The Foundation continues to hold events to raise funds for the purchase of medial equipment and is committed to reaching the campaign goal of over $1,000,000.
