    Donald L. Hawn, 78, of Keithsburg, died Friday, July 26, 2013 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Keithsburg First Christian Church with Rev. Charles Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Greenmound Cemetery, Keithsburg. Serving as pallbearers are Mike Kenney, Kaleb Rhoades, Steve Herman, Mike Palmer, Lloyd Kenney and John Rhoades. Honorary pallbearers are Hoe Doonan and Clement Griffith. Visitation was Tuesday, July 30, 2013 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left for the Keithsburg First Christian Church or Keithsburg Volunteer Fire/Ambulance. Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo is handling arrangements.
    Donald Lewane Hawn was born October 15, 1934 in New Boston, a son of Rolla Otis and Irene Louise Wagner Hawn. He attended Abington Center (a rural Seaton school) and Keithsburg Grade School. He graduated from Keithsburg High School, where he was active in sports. Don married Iris Irene Greer on November 25, 1954 at the former Keithsburg Methodist Church by Rev. John Keller.
    He served 2 years in the Army during the Korean Conflict, one of those years in Germany. Upon his return, he worked for Anderson Lumber Co. in Keithsburg and Aledo Street Dept. He also worked for the Corps of Engineers of Rock Island at Lock and Dam 18 for 7 years, before he began farming for himself. He was a pioneer of his time the first to irrigate in 1964, had the first center pivot valley irrigation system and raised vegetable crops. In 1968 he was named to the Dekalb 200 Bushel Club and in 1969 he received the Top Farmers of American Association Award.
    Mr. Hawn was active in his community. He served on the Keithsburg Township Board for eight years. He also was a member of the former Keithsburg Methodist Church and current member of Keithsburg Christian Church, the former Keithsburg Eastern Star Mary Burns Chapter #24, the former Keithsburg Robert Burns Masonic Lodge #113, Aledo Masonic Lodge #126, Peoria Mohammed Temple Shrine, Mercer County Farm Bureau, Pheasants Forever, Duck Unlimited, American Ostrich Association, Mercer County Historical Society and National Rifle Association.
    Don was an avid hunter and enjoyed all wildlife. He started the Wild Cat Hunting Reserve. He enjoyed all sporting events. In his spare time, he enjoyed plowing snow, smoking turkeys and making jerky. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and doing for others.
    Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Iris Hawn, Keithsburg; daughter, Mardeana DeRoo (John Rhoades) of Washington, IL; son, Dena (Becky) Hawn, Keithsburg; “son with no papers” Lloyd (Patsy) Kenney, Taylor Ridge; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Nathaniel Rhoades and brother Otis Hawn, Jr.
