  • The fifth annual 3,000 step Freedom Walk honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7th, at the American Legion, 515 W. 1st Ave., Milan.

A flag imprinted with the names of the people killed in the attacks will be on display.

Walkers and other event participants will gather in front of the Legion hall. Following brief comments, Legionnaires will lead the walkers on the 1 ½-mile trek along the Hennepin Canal walkway. Pre-registration is not required.

The public family-oriented event is open to men, women and children. A light lunch will follow the walk. There is no charge for the lunch, but free-will donations to help defray the cost of the meal will be appreciated.

Post Adjutant Norman Dunlap said the 1 ½-mile route was chosen because the approximately 3,000 steps to cover that distance roughly equate to the number of people killed in the attacks. There is no rain date for the Freedom Walk, he said. “The people who died that day at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, or aboard the hijacked planes didn’t have a choice. And although we have a choice, we will walk -- rain-or-shine -- to remember and honor them.”
