A Dallas City man sustained non-life threatening injuries and another individual was killed after a two-vehicle crash early this morning just outside of La Harpe.

According to a crash alert from the Illinois State Police District 14, a 2003 Mack was headed eastbound on Illinois Route 9 at around 6:30 a.m. just west of Hancock County Road 2650 East when a deer crossed into its path. The driver, Charles F. De Jaynes, 77, of Dallas City pressed the breaks to avoid it and began to skid.

Another vehicle, a 2000 Chevrolet, was headed westbound on Route 9 when the deer entered the roadway. De Jaynes crossed the centerline into the westbound lane, striking the Chevrolet at the front of the driver's side door.

Both vehicles went off the roadway to the north after impact. The driver of the Chevrolet, whose identity has been withheld pending notification of family, had not been wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle and was ultimately killed as a result of the crash.

De Jaynes had non-incapacitating injuries and was later treated at Carthage Memorial Hospital. He was charged with improper lane usage.

The Hancock County Sheriff's and Coroner's offices, the La Harpe Fire Department and Hancock County EMS assisted at the scene of the crash.
