  • Bill Glancey, the recently retired detective with the Mercer County Sheriff's Department, was sworn in as the new Mercer County Sheriff at the Jan. 7 meeting of the board.
It was a unanimous vote of 8-0-1 with Council member George Howard abstaining on the advice of his colleagues.
Howard is a candidate for the office of sheriff.
Howard did add that if he were to vote it would have been a unanimous vote in favor of Glancey.
County Clerk Phyllis Bewley swore Glancey in at the board meeting which had many family members in attendance.
Former Mercer County Sheriff Tom Thompson resigned in December. On Dec. 4 the Mercer County Democratic Central Committee met and a 15 member committee unanimously voted for Glancey as the new sherriff. Glancey will serve the remainder of Thompson's term which will last until Dec. 1, 2014.
There will be a primary March 18 and the general election to elect the new sheriff is November 4, 2004. A number of candidates have stepped forward and will run for the office.
Glancey has indicated that he will not seek election as sheriff in the upcoming election.
