Joan C. Martin, 93, of Aledo, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Genesis Senior Living Center in Aledo. Services are 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 28, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aledo. Burial is in the Aledo Cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church where memorials may be left to Messiah Lutheran Church. She was born Feb. 5, 1921 in Aledo, to David and Nellie Anderson Bostrom. They owned and operated the Merchant’s Hotel in Aledo where she was raised as a little girl. She graduated from Aledo High School and attended Augustana College in Rock Island. She married F. “Bill” Martin Jr. Nov. 6, 1943 in Ft. Bliss, Texas. He died May 26, 2009.
Prior to her marriage, Joan taught school in Springfield. She was a homemaker and helped in the operation of the family farm and previously worked at the Mercer County Courthouse in the recorder’s office for many years.
Joan enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble and cribbage, reading, cooking, canning, freezing, camping, square dancing, traveling and wintering in Arizona.
She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Joan is survived by: two daughters: Debby (Steve) Dennison of Galesburg; Nancy (Curt) McCoy of Salem, Wis.; a son: David Martin of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Heather, Josh, Angela, Michael, Michelle, Alison, Daniel and Spencer; five great grandchildren: Isabel, Scarlett, Brooklyn, Lileigh and Mackenzie; one sister, Beverly (Paul) Likely of Las Vegas, Nev.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; and one great grandson, Tyson Matthew Collins.
