  • Donna Jean Duffy, 69, of Viola, passed into Glory on May 6, 2014 at Trinity Rock Island, after enduring with strength a brief but devastating illness.

Born to Floyd and Disie Lawson Weihler on April 22, 1945, Donna lived and served her entire life in the intimate community of Viola, surrounded by lifelong friends and family.

She graduated from Winola High School in 1963, and is still very close to many of her classmates. She worked for Bituminus Insurance in Rock Island for a decade after high school, during which she married Gene Lingafelter in 1970 (divorced in 1984) and had two children: Tobin in 1973 and Nichol in 1975. After Tobin was born, she took a break from paid work and didn’t return until 1984, when she began to work for WHBF TV in Rock Island, doing commercial traffic. She remarried on July 2, 1988 to William Duffy, with whom she celebrated 25 years together last year. After remarrying, she was able to focus her time on her favorite work – mothering and serving.

She was a faithful member of Viola United Methodist Church, where she served as the nursery school teacher for 40 years and inspired others to serve likewise in her footsteps.

She was lovingly known as “Nonna” to her seven wonderful grandchildren — including one adopted from Ethiopia in 2012 — and although they lived several hours away she visited them all the time and was adored by each of them.

She is and will always be a much beloved mother, grandmother, sister, wife, aunt, cousin, and friend. She is survived by her husband of more than 25 years, William E. Duffy of Viola; children Toby (Jane) Lingafelter of St. Louis, Mo. and Nichol (Bryan) Starr of Charlotte, N.C.; seven adored grandchildren: Jonah Starr (9), Gavin Lingafelter (8), Brady Lingafelter (8), Boden Starr (7), Annalie Donna Starr (5), Elsahday Starr (2), and Ashby Lingafelter (2); sisters/best friends Shirley (Duane) Metzler of Pekin, Mary Frances (Eldon Nichols) Masters of Milan, and Carol Peterson of Viola; aunt Jackie (Ken) Brown of Viola, and uncle Richard (Jane) Lawson of Viola; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by both parents and several aunts and uncles.

Life is meant to be not just lived, but SPENT. She spent hers in loving Christian service, and because of that lived the best life.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Viola United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Harris-Cosby officiating. Music will be provided by Rose Tary, Pauline Brown and Larry Selle. Burial will follow the service at Viola Cemetery. Pallbearers are Eldon Nichols, Scott Metzler, Sean Brown, Duane Metzler, Jr., Brice Kness and Ryan Clark. Honorary Pallbearers are Mike Lawson, Rich Lawson, Rob Spengler, Kirby Earnest and Mike Kness. Visitation is Friday, May 9, 2014 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Memorials may be left for the Viola United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be left at www.dennisonfuneralhome.com.
