WASHINGTON, D.C. -- July 15, 2014 -- Genesis Medical Center, Davenport has been ranked as "high-performing" in seven medical specialties and ranked No. 2 overall among Iowa hospitals in U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2014-15 "http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals"Best Hospitals rankings.

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport was recognized as “high performing’’ in diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and, pulmonology.

No other Quad Cities hospital was recognized.

"Recognition from U.S. News in its annual report is highly sought by hospitals and health systems across the country,'' said Doug Cropper, President and CEO, Genesis Health System. "The recognition by an independent and credible source is affirmation our system-wide focus on quality of care, patient safety and excellent patient outcomes is on the right track.

"The important message from recognition like this to our patients is that they can expect a consistently high level of care and outstanding outcomes at Genesis.

“Patients also have better access than ever before to information about safety and quality of care at hospitals. Information in the hands of our patients is a valuable
tool. We value their research and evaluation of Genesis.”

U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties and 10 pediatrics specialties. In most specialties, U.S. News ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers.

“This is not only recognition of Genesis Health System and Genesis Medical Center, Davenport; it is recognition of the efforts every day to provide the safest, highest-quality patient experience possible,’’ Cropper added.

Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as being among the region’s best. Just 3 percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.

Covering 94 metro areas in the U.S., http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area"regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions. The regional rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked Best Hospital or who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care. The U.S. News metro rankings give many such patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community and in their health insurance network.
