BLOOMINGTON, ILL. -- July, 16, 2014 -- Farming and conservation work hand in hand on the Roy Wendte farm, making it a natural choice to serve as the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) 2014 Sustainability Showcase Farm.  Experts from throughout Illinois will join farmers and industry representatives to discuss sustainable agriculture practices at the ISA-sponsored Sustainability Showcase Farm Tour Aug. 7 at Wendte Farms near Altamont, Ill.
Attendees will hear from 11 sustainability experts, with presentations and hands-on demonstrations about how to ensure nutrients, seed and other farm inputs get exactly where they are needed and in the right amounts.  Topics to be presented include:
    • Equipment demonstrations
    • Soil quality improvement techniques
    • Government support programs
    • Conservation funding
    • Cover cropping
    • ISA support
The Wendte family also will discuss how their farming practices help to enhance and protect natural resources.  ISA Director and Production Committee Chairman Don Guinnip says the Wendtes were chosen as a "2014 Sustainability Showcase Farm" because of the family's three-generation commitment to being sustainable innovators.
"Name any sustainable farming practice and it's a good bet the Wendtes have adopted it or are thinking about it," says Guinnip, who farms near Marshall, Ill.  "ISA organized this event to show Illinois farmers are environmental leaders and to share ways to keep improving."
