  • The Monmouth-Roseville Titans appeared to be in midseason form Wednesday night handily putting away the Mercer County Golden Eagles in two games 25-5 and 25-17. It was the first game of the season for both teams, each with new coaches.
"I thought we looked great," said Titans head coach Lisa Miller. "We played well from the beginning and pushed all the way through. "I tight Kaylee Woodard, a freshman, did a great job starting and playing in her first varsity game. She had some sweet hits."
Miller added,"We just need to continue to work hard as a team."
Golden Eagle head coach Malorie Higgins said, "We got our first game out of the way. It was a loss but it was against a non-conference team. They made progress in the first match. They've got a new head and assistant coach in Whitley (Frieden) and I. I think they like to doubt what we sat. Then knew tonight in the locker room after the match why we tell them what we do."
Higgins said "I saw a lot of good things. Our defense got better. We served well. We need to work on our serve/receive. They are telling me what they need to work on to win."
The first game was owned by the Titans completely. They broke out to a 7-1 lead forcing Higgins to call a timeout. The Titans increased their lead to 11-1 before the Golden Eagles scored their second point. Haley Johnston served out the final seven points for the Titans.
The Golden Eagles got on track in the second game. The two teams split the first six points before Mercer County went on a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 lead and force Miller to call a timeout.
The Titans bounced back and took a 10-9 lead as Bailey Cundiff served three aces in a row.
The Titans didn't trail after that playing well behind the powerful spikes of Emma Willhardt.
