Karli Johnson of Sherrard has had her video selected as a top ten finalist for the nation-wide Toyota College Grad Video Contest. Johnson graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in communications with her major in media and minor in art from Northern Illinois University in December.

A free public concert entitled “Smokin’ Hot Harmony” will top off the 2nd Annual Acappellooza Festival at Assumption High School Auditorium at 4 p.m., on Saturday, May 19. Members of the Sherrard Junior Class Senate have combined prom with community service. Individuals purchasing prom tickets were able to trade in cans for money off of their prom ticket. One can equals $1 off for up to $10 off te price of the prom tickets.
Several cans have been collected and will be distributed to the Sherrard Food Pantry.
A new building under construction at Black Hawk College will house the college’s new Materials Science Technology program and will feature a new laboratory specifically equipped for the hands-on program.
Yesterday, voting members of the Augustana faculty voted to maintain the college’s trimester academic calendar. Faculty members cast their ballots after a three-year process that considered the pros and cons of changing to a semester system.
Congressman Bobby Schilling (IL-17) today voted in favor of a bill to prevent a scheduled July 1 hike in interest rates on Stafford student loans. Under a 2007 law, the interest rate on these subsidized loans to undergraduate students was decreased from 6.8% to 3.4% through June 30, at which time under the law the interest rates will increase. Without Congressional action, these interest rates will return to previous levels and double on July 1.
