Patricia Mae Brown, 93, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 2:32 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Courtyard Estates of Monmouth.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth.
Patricia Mae Brown, 93, of Monmouth, IL passed away at 2:32 pm Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Courtyard Estates of Monmouth.
She was born on August 10, 1924 in Alexis, IL, to Floyd James and Sadye Bibby Mahaffey. She and Merle Brown were married at Treasure Island, California while Merle served in the Navy there. They were happily married for 69 years. Their greatest love was sharing their home with their family as it grew and grew over those years. Patricia was the cook and Merle was the assistant for all the dinners and parties that they hosted for not only family, but friends from far and near. There was always room for one more at the table. While Santa was busy visiting many children at Christmastime, Patricia loved assisting as "Mrs. Claus" and keeping Santa on time.
She attended Lone Star School and graduated valedictorian from Alexis High School in 1942. She furthered her education at the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, IA, and was then employed at the National Bank of Aledo. She later graduated in 1956 from Burlington Beauty Academy and opened her own beauty shop at 120 North C St. which she operated for over 30 years. For eight years, Patricia and her mother operated The Gift Nook which hosted card parties, clubs, showers and dinners in their home. She later enjoyed working at Peter’s Jewelry and Dottie’s Corner.
Patricia was an active member of Faith United Presbyterian Church where she had served as a Deacon, Elder, Trustee and as the Chair for the Bereavement and Social Committee. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Norwood C.C. Club, and Chapter LE of PEO. She served on the Monmouth School Board and was a Scout Den Mother for nine years. She was elected the First Lady of the Monmouth Sesquicentennial in 1981.
She is survived by four sons, James (Kris) Brown of Monmouth, Tary (Lyndea) Brown of Albany, Georgia, Dennis Brown (Sandy) of Aledo, and Kriss (Cindy) Brown of Naperville, IL. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, a special cousin Marian Bailey from Galesburg and a nephew Butch (Marilyn) Mahaffey, Alexis, as well as many great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Faith United Presbyterian Church at 200 South 8th St. in Monmouth. Visitation will be Friday, October 13th at the church from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Memorial funds may go to Faith United Presbyterian Church, Relay For Life of Warren County, PEO Chapter LE or Honor Flight.
