After eight months of negotiations a tentative agreement has been reached between the Mercer County Board of Education and teachers' union (Mercer County Education Association). Both the school board and teachers union must ratify the contract.

Sherrard BOE is struggling with making cuts in programs and staffing for next year. Besides general line item reductions, programs like the pre-school program and certain athletic programs may be reduced or eliminated. A public informational meeting has been set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Educating the nation's youth has been a priority of the federal government since its passing of the No Child Left Behind act in 2001. By 2003 schools throughout the U.S. were scrambling to keep up with the bill's rising requirements to educate our youth. Rockridge's story is just one of many area schools who are struggling to adhere to the federal mandate.

The Mercer County High School performed the musical The Sound of Music on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4 and Thursday, Nov. 5. Friday night's 7 p.m. performance is the final chance to see the show at the Mercer County High School auditorium.

A series of free H1N1 Flu vaccination clinics are being held in Mercer County over the past few weeks, with the next one slated for Thursday, Oct. 29, in an effort to stave off a flu epidemic. Interest is high with more than 400 individuals attending the first clinic and between 600-700 yesterday's clinic.

A Haunted Forest is one Halloween option open to individuals this weekend. The forest is above an abandoned Coal Mine near Sherrard. Hours are from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24. Bring three canned goods for the food pantry for a $3 discount. A special children's event will be held Saturday for elementary aged kids from noon to 2 p.m.

The 2009 - 2010 school year budget in Sherrard CUSD #200 estimates $15,903,292 in revenue and spending of $15,267,513. The district should have $7,007,665 in all funds at the end of the year, according to budget figures prepared by the superintendent.

The Mercer Milers walking club, formed at Apollo Elementary, held its first 20-minute walk during the noon recess on Tuesday, Sept. 22. 2009. Funding for the program came from a Safer Walk to School grant.

Mercer County School District 404 met Wednesday June 10, at the district's bi-monthly meeting and settled on several types of insurance carriers for the district. Commercial, property, liability, workman's compensation, student and accident insurance were all decided on by the district's board.
