Mercer County head wrestling coach Joe Verlinden knew this year's team would be a good one but they have surpassed even his expectations.
The squad was 21-1 in dual meet, as of Jan. 24 and ranked as high as eighth in the state of Illinois.
An informational release was received this afternoon from Rockridge Principal Katy Hasson about a skin condition called Herpes Gladiatorum, commonly called "skin herpes." All wrestling activities have been halted at Rockridge effective today through Feb. 1, when the situation will be reevaluated.
A 20-4 run in the third quarter by the West Central Heat girls ruined Mercer County’s chance for a win Jan. 11. The game ended up in a 39-36 win for West Central.
Sherrard girls' track coach Todd Volkert has been named the Coach of the Year for Class A Girls' Track and Field by the (ITCCA) Illinois Track and Field and Cross Country Association.
This is the second time he has been awarded this honor. The first came following the 2007 season.
Twenty-seven third through sixth grade girls participated in Mercer County Youth Basketball this past fall. The future Golden Eagles had three separate teams that played in the AlWood Youth League during the months of November and December.
Mercer County's football team had eight all conference selections on offense and six on defense this year. The Golden Eagles, in the team's first year of existence tied with Stark County and United for top honors in the conference.
Several local teams will compete in the Orion Tip-Off Classic Nov. 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28, including Rockridge, Sherrard, Orion, Knoxville, Annawan, Erie, Kewanee and Fulton.
Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at Rockridge High School is the first annual Brandon's Awareness Run, a two-mile run/walk starting at 10 a.m. Late registration is from 8:30 - 9:45 a.m. The event is to raise awareness about testicular cancer.
