Downtown Rock Island streets closed, bus routes changed for Rock Island Grand Prix

Many of the streets in downtown Rock Island will be closed beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 in preparation for the Rock Island Grand Prix kart races presented by AT&T.

Golden Eagles win thriller on opening night

The foot of Luke Boucher lifted the Golden Eagles to a 31-28 victory over the Annawan-Wethersfield Titans Friday night. Boucher's field goal with 3.4 seconds remaining on the clock was a game winner.

Public discusses sports complex upgrade

"Eagles Take Flight" is the name of the fund-raiser that a community group is using to raise more than $1.5 million for a sports complex upgrade at Mercer County High School.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Names Richard Leopold to new position

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that Mr. Richard Leopold has been selected as the Midwest Region’s Assistant Regional Director for Science Applications.  Leopold is currently the Director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.  Leopold is tentatively scheduled to report for his new position on Sep. 12, and will be stationed at the Midwest Regional Office in Ft. Snelling, Minn.

Sherrard holding Meet The Teams Aug. 18

Sherrard High School is holding its Meet the Teams night Aug. 18. The dinner is available to purchase from the boosters at 5:30 p.m.

New Windsor Rodeo Run is Aug. 21

The 23rd annual New Windsor Rodeo Run will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. This is a two and four mile run/walk. Walkers are welcome. The race starts and finishes at the east entrance of the rodeo grounds. The location of the event is the New Windsor Ball Park/Rodeo Grounds on the west edge of New Windsor.

Roast planned for Monmouth's Glasgo

On Saturday, July 31 former players, alumni, colleagues, opponents, family and friends will gather to Roast and Toast “TG”. The event has been planned by former players as a way to show respect and honor their coach and mentor.

Great River High Performance Schedules Speed and Plyometric Camp

 Great River High Performance is offering a speed and plyometric camp for athletes 13 and up. The camp is scheduled from 8:30 to 11 a.m., July 26 to 29, at the West Burlington High School Gym and Track, 408 W.  Van Weiss Blvd., West Burlington, Iowa
 

Telecommunication bill signed into law by Governor Quinn

Legislation sponsored by Senator Mike Jacobs (D -Moline) to overhaul of the existing Telecommunications Act has been signed into law by Governor Quinn. The re-write of this act will promote competition among telephone carriers throughout the state.

New online camping and shelter reservation system opens July 7

 Reservations for most Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) campsites, cabins, group campsites and picnic shelters for the 2010 season can be made online beginning July 7.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Celebrates Endangered Species Day

Five years ago, the U.S. Senate designated the third Friday in May as Endangered Species Day. This year, Endangered Species Day is May 21, an opportunity to raise awareness about imperiled plants, animals, and habitats, and to demonstrate ways that others can help conserve these resources.

The Sherrard Tigers girls track team won the Rockridge Sectional Friday, May 14.

MFH/ AMT Golf Outing rescheduled for June 25

A Four Person Best Ball Scramble/Preferred Ball tournament has been rescheduled for the Mercer Foundation for Health. The tournament is at Hawthorn Ridge Golf Course. The Foundation is accepting team entries until June 7.
   

May 15 deadline for YMCA Rhubarb Run T-shirts

The annual Mercer County YMCA Rhubarb Run pre-registration time is almost up. Registration cost go up to $20 per person after May 15. Call the Y at (309) 582-5101 for more information. A pre-race run is scheduled for May 29 at 8 a.m. The route is a scenic route in the southwest section of Aledo, starting at the Mercer County Family YMCA, 401 SW 2nd Ave., Aledo.

Wildlife organization promotes deer habitat

West Central Illinois branch of Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is hosting a 3D Archery Shoot, on Saturday, May 8, at Pope Creek Archery located at 1885 65th Ave., Aledo. Registration for the event begins at noon.

Apollo students take in Quad City River Bandits' game

Apollo Elementary School students, parents and teachers recently enjoyed a Quad City River Bandits' game compliments of the Bandits' Book Buddies reading program. Students advanced to first, second, and third bases by attaining their reading goals. Upon reaching their home base goal, a free ticket to a game was awarded.

Rockets knock off IVC with Goodwin walk-off

Gillian Goodwin’s two-run home run in the seventh inning propelled the Rockridge Rockets to a 9-7 victory April 21.
