The second annual 1 ½-mile Freedom Walk to honor the 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, at Milan American Legion, 515 W. 1st Ave., Milan.
Many of the streets in downtown Rock Island will be closed beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 in preparation for the Rock Island Grand Prix kart races presented by AT&T.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that Mr. Richard Leopold has been selected as the Midwest Region’s Assistant Regional Director for Science Applications. Leopold is currently the Director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Leopold is tentatively scheduled to report for his new position on Sep. 12, and will be stationed at the Midwest Regional Office in Ft. Snelling, Minn.
On Monday, Aug. 9 the Rockridge School Board unanimously approved the hiring of Chad Ruden as the new head varsity wrestling coach at Rockridge High School.
Sherrard High School is holding its Meet the Teams night Aug. 18. The dinner is available to purchase from the boosters at 5:30 p.m.
The 23rd annual New Windsor Rodeo Run will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. This is a two and four mile run/walk. Walkers are welcome. The race starts and finishes at the east entrance of the rodeo grounds. The location of the event is the New Windsor Ball Park/Rodeo Grounds on the west edge of New Windsor.
The first pitch in the USA/ASA 14-and-under Girls Fastpitch National Championship Tournament won’t be thrown until Monday morning, but the Quad-Cities is preparing for an USA/ASA invasion.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi River Project invites campers and the visiting public to attend campfire programs held at Clark’s Ferry and Shady Creek Recreation Areas. Throughout the summer until Labor Day, presenters will cover a host of topics for all to enjoy. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi River Project has closed Clark's Ferry Recreation Area in Montpelier, IA; Shady Creek Recreation Area east of Fairport, IA; Andalusia Slough Recreation Area west of Andalusia, IL; Blanchard Island Recreation Area south of Illinois City, IL; Kilpeck Landing south of Muscatine, IA; and Ferry Landing near the northern edge of Oakville, IA due to the rising floodwaters.
The Rock Island Grand Prix has announced an exciting new program designed to spur participation in the event’s 4-cycle Animal classes and boost participation in 4-cycle sprint racing in the U.S.
On Saturday, July 31 former players, alumni, colleagues, opponents, family and friends will gather to Roast and Toast “TG”. The event has been planned by former players as a way to show respect and honor their coach and mentor.

General Grind and Machine's team was one of 23 teams that raised funds for the Mercer Foundation for Health golf outing on June 25, 2010. The Grind team won the best ball tournament held at Hawthorne Ridge Golf Course in Aledo.
Registration is underway for the Monmouth College Track & Field and Cross Country Camp to be held July 5-8. The camp, which will run from 6-8:15 each evening, is open to boys and girls entering grades 7-12. Cost for the camp is $40 if registered before July 1. One Bighead Asian carp has been found in Lake Calumet, the first that has been discovered above the Electric Barrier System designed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to prevent any Asian carp from swimming into the Great Lakes. The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (RCC) made the announcement of the finding, and will plan to first follow it with more sampling, and then with efforts including netting and electrofishing in the next several weeks, with the goal of reducing the number of Asian carp below the electric barriers.
