Sherrard Dance Team places 3rd at state

After competing in Batavia on Jan. 8, the Sherrard Dance Team got first, and got a chance to go to state.

Sherrard hurler Ashley Anderson to play softball at Augustana

Ashley Anderson, a standout athlete from Sherrard High School in Sherrard, has announced that she will be attending Augustana in the upcoming academic year. She will enroll in the fall and plans on being a member of coach Kris Kistler’s Viking softball program.

West Central topples Sherrard

The West Central Heat defeated Sherrard in the first round of the Orion Basketball Regional Monday, Feb. 20, 76-56.
Sherrard's Jake Friichtenicht led all scorers with 34 points including six three pointers.

Nelson and Morford advances to semifinals

Mercer County Golden Eagle Derrick Morford and Zach Nelson advanced to the semifinals with quarterfinal victories on Friday in the Class 1A Illinois State Wrestling Tournament.

Tigers lose heartbreaker to Eureka

The Sherrard Tigers erased a 14 point fourth quarter deficit against the Eureka Hornets only to lose in the final minute, 49-48.

Points were hard to come by for most of the contest. Eureka started the final period with a 35-30 lead.
The Hornets went on an 11-0 run early in the final period and led 46-32 with 2:52 remaining in the contest. Eureka appeared to have things well in hand.

Mercer County wrestlers split on Thursday

The Mercer County wrestlers had mixed results at the Class A State Wrestling meet preliminaries on Thursday.
Zach Nelson, at 152 pounds, advanced with a major decision over Monmouth-Roseville's Gage Hedges.
At 138 pounds Derrick Morford defeated Brian Czyl of Lisle by major decision, 9-0.
At 126 pounds Michael Harris of Althoff Catholic defeated Logan Snyder of Mercer County by major decision, 13-5.
At 132 pounds Chet McClure of Gibson City -Melvin-Sible defeated Tristen Finch of Mercer county 3-2.

At 195 pounds Alex Peterson of Wilmington defeated Chad Kirkhove of Sherrard 7-5.

Sherrard faces Eureka tonight for Knoxville Sectional Championship

The Sherrard Tigers girls basketball team will face Eureka for the Knoxville Sectional Championship Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Sherrard defeated Illinois West, 57-49 in the opening round of the sectional while Eureka beat El Paso Gridley, 57-53.

The winner of the Knoxville Sectional Championship will face the winner of the Rock Falls Sectional Championship at the Monmouth Super-Sectional Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Sherrard thumps Annawan, 60-40

The Sherrard Tigers boys basketball team defeated Annawan 60-40 on Feb. 15 at Sherrard.

Sherrard girls top Illini West

The Sherrard High School girls basketball team defeated Illinis West 57-49 in the first game of the Knoxville Sectional Monday Feb. 13.

The Tigers will face the winner of tonight's  El Paso-Gridley vs Eureka game (7:30 start) in the sectional final Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers outscored the Chargers 17-7 to take a 29-20 lead into halftime.
Carly Adams led Sherrard in Scoring with 14 points while Abbey Warner chipped in for 12 more.
Illini West was led in scoring by Lauren Gronewold with 21 points.

Tigers falter in fourth

The Kewanee Boilermakers staged a fourth quarter comeback to nudge the Sherrard Tigers 70-68 Feb. 7.

Trailing 54-52 after three quarters the Boilermakers outscored the Tigers 18-14 in the final period to pull off the victory. Glen Wells led the comeback scoring nine points in the period while Dayton Ince chipped in a couple of three pointers.

Bob Mitton Invite postponed until Saturday

The Bob Mitton Invite has been posponed until Saturday morning at 8 a.m. according to Athletig Director Blake Von Holten. The tournament was supposed to have begun Friday evening.

Mercer County, Sherrard and Rockridge are  just three of the 17 area teems that will be competing in the 29th Annual "Bob Mitton" tournament Jan. 20 and 21 at Orion High School.

Moseley sits school record in Rocket loss to Tigers

Kaylee Moseley of Rockridge shattered a school record hitting seven three pointers Jan. 17 in the Rockets 75-65 loss to the Sherrard Tigers.
Moseley broke the record of five set in 2004 by Ashley Darland.

Orion boys top Sherrrard, 60-41

The Orion boys basketball team defeated Sherrard, 60-41 on Jan. 6.

The Tigers hung close to the Chargers in the first quarter trailing only 11-10 after one period. It was the second period where the chargers started to light it up outscoring Orion 20-9. Tanner Williams and Dylan Schultz scored seven points apiece in the period to pace the Chargers. Orion led 31-19 at the half.

The Sherrard Tigers took all but two bouts from Davenport Central Jan. 6 winning 70-6.
At 106 pounds Chance Teel won by forfeit.
At 113 pounds Jacob Hast (S) pinned Ian Herren in 55 seconds.
At 120 pounds Jacob Dillbeck (S) pinned Jacob Houghton in 1:24.
At 126 pounds Caleb Bedford (S) won by decision over Alex Morely (S), 7-2.
At 132 pounds Cody Cullor (S) pinned Bemy Ruiz in 3:54.
At 138 pounds Ricky Vanderham (S) won a major decision over Tim Chapman, 14-6.
At 145 pounds Zach Gustafson (S) pinned Joe Faison in 3:11.
At 152 pounds Dylan Mizaur (S) pinned Eli Kualer in 2:46.
At 160 pounds Schuyler Wardlow (S) pinned Wick Petterson in 4:59.
At 170 pounds Jacob Behrendt (S) won a decision over Jon Stoops (S), 9-4.
At 182 pounds Sam Congdon (S) won by forfeit.
At 195 pounds Chad Kirkhove (S) pinned Brian Merar in 3:33.
At 220 pounds Nate Steele (S) won by forfeit.
At 285 pounds Ben Corlett (S) won by forfeit.

Wednesday night was a rough night for the Macomb Bombers wrestling team which dominated the squad 63-4.

Tigers stop Rockets, 65-52

The Sherrard Tigers girls basketball team defeated Rockridge 65-52 on Dec. 1.

The Tigers jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter Riley Strandgard scored all seven of her points for Sherrard in the first quarter. Anne Winston chipped in with five more as four Tigers scored.

Mercer County girls and boys place first, second at Prime Beef Run

The Mercer County girls and boys cross country teams placed first and second at the Prime Beef Run in Monmouth on Sept. 7.

Sherrard beats Annawan in three games

As first matches of the season go, Sherrard's was pretty good. The Tigers came out on top after a three game duel with Annawan. They were also challenged in the contest and responded well.
“I don't know what we are going to work on at the next practice,” said head coach Lori Brown after the match. “Usually something stands out. We missed a few serves. Other than than I can't complain.”
