Four Monmouth College softball players make up one-third of the South Division All-Midwest Conference team.
Seniors Lauren Bergstresser (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and Brooke Twohill (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and sophomores Caitlin Lingle (Andalusia, Ill./Rockridge) and Sommer Foster (Alexis, Ill./United) were selected for the honor in a vote of the league’s coaches.
Colton Wood lit up the scoreboard Tuesday night with 31 points as the Mercer County Golden Eagles beat United 54-43.
The United girls basketball earned its second win of the season Wednesday night Jan. 18 in the Lincoln Trail Conference Tournament defeating Mercer County 54-31.
The United High School girls basketball team lost to Farmington 69-53 on Jan. 7.
After each team scored 13 points in the first quarter the Farmers went on a 19-6 run in the second period and took a 32-19 lead into the locerroom at the half.
The Farmers added 21 points in the third quarter and led 53-35 after three quarters.
The Red Storm outscored Farmington 18-16 in the final period but it wasn't enough.
Scoring for United were: Ashlynn Winkler, 17; Cassandra Ellison, 11; Kelsey Crain, nine; Megan Patterson, eight; Alicia Pierce, five; Sadie vanNorman, two and Sydney Toops, one.
Leading scorers for Farmington were: Jenna Purich, 15; Auslyn Camp, 13; Brittany Danly, 12; and Nena Frvendt, 11.
The West Central boys basketball team beat West Central, 79-49 on Jan. 3.
West Central jumped out on top in the opening period outscoring United 24-14. Trey Goff hit four shots for the Heat and scored nine of the team's 24 points. Hollis led United with six.
The Heat scored another 19 points in the second period as Colin Rothzen led West Central in the period with nine points. The Heat held a commanding 43-25 lead at the half.
The heat cooled down some in the third period but still outscored United 14-13. Gavin hit a trio of three pointers in the period as the Red Storm attempted a comeback.
The Heat poured it on in the final period outscoring United 22-11.
The West Prairie girls basketball team edged United 35-34 on Jan. 2.
United took an early 11-8 lead in the first quarter Ashlyn Winkler scored seven of the Red Storm's 11 first quarter points. West Prairie went on a 12-1 run in the second period and led 20-12 at the half. Winkler and Megan Patterson hit two baskets each in the second period and helped cut the West Prairie lead to 27-21 but the end of the third quarter.
Winkler hit for seven points in the final period and teammate Sadie Van Norman also hit a couple of baskets but it wasn't enough as West Prairie held on for the victory.
Scoring for United were: Winkler, 18; Patterson, five; Van Norman, four; Kelsey Crain, three and Sydney Toops and Cassie Ellison, two.
The Mercer County boys and girls cross country teams each finished first at the Farmington Invite Monday, Aug. 29.

Tuesday's United vs Annawan/Wethersfieldbaseball and softball games have been postponed. Both will be played Wednesday, April 27 at 4:30 p.m. softball at the high school and baseball in Alexis.
The United vs Ridgewood baseball and softball games scheduled for today April 19, have been postponed and will be played Friday, May 6 at 4:30 p.m. at United.
United's Augusta Chandler will continue her academic and basketball career at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.

It's as easy to remember as ABC: Action, which includes eliminating such distractions as cell phones and the TV; Behavior control, which involves discipline that isn't harsh and also teaches manners; and Communication that shows genuine interest and concern about what's going on in each others' lives.
The United Red Storm defeated West Central 44-18 on Jan. 24.
The United girls basketball team held off Ridgewood, 55-52 on Jan. 17.
After scoring only 27 points through the first three quarters RIdgwood scored 25 points in the final period to make it a contest.
But they fell just short losing by three points.
The brackets are set for the Lincoln Trail Conference girls basketball tournament, with three opening round games tipping Saturday.
The Monmouth College men’s and women’s track teams have won 38 of a possible 40 Midwest Conference indoor and outdoor track championships in the last 10 years and head coach Roger Haynes hopes he can cook up another batch of titles in 2011.
