High winds Friday played a part in a fatal traffic accident on I-74, about two miles south of the Big X. The name of the victim was released Monday, Feb. 22. A Viola man escaped injury.

At 12:30 p.m., a semi-tractor trailer was blown over on I-74, miles marker 19, and blocked all eastbound lanes, causing traffic to back up. At about 1:35 p.m., a 2005 Buick sedan traveling in the left lane and driven by Bernita E. Otto, 91, Washington, Ill., hit a stopped Chevrolet pickup driven by Bryce Schroeder, 27, Viola, and pushed the truck into the center median.

Otto and the passenger in her car, whose name was not included in the report, were extricated from the car and transported to Genesis Medical Center in Silvis. Otto was flown to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria and pronounced dead Friday night.

No information is available on the passenger of the Buick. Schroeder and his passenger were treated and released at the scene.
