Wayne “Guben” LaVern Johnson, 88, of Galva, IL, died peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Galva Courtyard Estates. Services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home in Alpha. Burial is in the Andover Cemetery where military rites will be conducted. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Monday at Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home in Alpha where masonic rites will be at 7:00 p.m.

He was born in Galesburg, IL to Carl A. and Lisa E. Danielson Johnson on February 16, 1928 following their immigration from Sweden in 1911.  He grew up in New Windsor and graduated from New Windsor High School in 1946.

He served in the U.S. Marines Corps in 1946 and was stationed in Washington, D.C. at the Marine Barracks at 8th and I.  He served with George C. Scott. He graduated from Augustana College in 1953 with an accounting degree.   He married Glenna C. Cannon July 20, 1952 in Moline, IL.   She died April 15, 1992.  He later married Beverly Johnson October 28, 2000.

Gube resided in New Windsor, Rock Island, Andover, Galva and Alexis over the years and loved the home that he and Glenna built in Sun Lakes, AZ, wintering there from 1985 to 2013.  Gube and his brothers, Dick and Curt owned Alpha Ready Mix.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in New Windsor and the Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover.  Gube was also a member of the Mohammed Shrine, Black Hawk Chapter, Moline Consistory, 68 year member of the American Legion, the Viking Club and the Elks Club.  He was mayor of Andover for 16 years and was a founding member of Valley View Country Club.
Gube enjoys reading, investing, bowling, golf and Manhattans.  He spent many an hour at the Cozy Inn with brother, Curt after bowling and at the Andover Inn with good friend, Bob VanMelkebeke.  He and good friend, Bake Barton enjoyed a Drambuie together at Julie and Greg’s annual 4th of July party and the Barton Friday happy hour.

He always enjoyed his time with family and friends.  Gube was supportive of all his nieces and nephews in countless ways.  He loved visiting with people and his morning coffee with friends in Sun Lakes and Alexis.

He is survived by his wife, Bev, sisters-in-law, Norma Johnson, Audrey Cannon; nieces and nephews, Judy (Jack) Hansen, Kathy (Jerry) Twitty, Linnea Johnson, Julie (Greg) Strandberg, Brian Johnson and his fiancé Mary Gegenhuber, Tim (Terri) Cannon, Pam (Danny) Harrison, Harry (Lisa) Cannon, Debra (Chris) Owens and Lucy (Bob) Hensley; several great and great great nieces and nephews and goddaughter, Cheryl Lehman, step-children, Rick (Mandy) Johnson, Robbie (Moses) Anderson, TJ (Wendy) Johnson, Terry (Meredith) Johnson, Polly (Donnie) McGraw.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Glenna, two brothers, Elis “Swede”, Daniel “Ole”, Richard and Curtis Johnson, nephew, Fred Johnson and niece, Marla Johnson, brothers-in-law, Troy and Harry Cannon.
