Inclement weather claimed the third and final day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Women’s Golf Championship on Saturday, October 7 but that didn’t stop Augustana from enjoying its most successful finish since the 2012-13 season. Head Coach Tom Lawrence’s crew finished in a tie for third place with a 36-hole total of 664 (338+326).

Vikings close fall portion of season with third-place tie at CCIW Championship; Jenna Lawrence and Melanie Loeffler tie for 10th overall

DECATUR, Ill. – Augustana recorded its highest conference finish in five years at this past weekend’s CCIW Championship in West Chicago, Illinois. Coach Tom Lawrence’s Vikings (338-326—664) made up seven strokes on host Wheaton (331-333—664) Friday to tie the Thunder for third place in the team standings behind Illinois Wesleyan (319-314—633) and Carthage (329-324—653). Inclement weather canceled Saturday’s third and final round. Individually, senior Jenna Lawrence (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Melanie Loeffler (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) tied for 10th place. Each shot 82 on Thursday and 81 on Friday.

Loeffler leads Augustana with an average of 81.0 strokes per round. She won two events this fall and finished in the top ten in six of seven events. Lawrence is second at 85.6 strokes per round. Freshman Miranda Sharp (Minooka HS, Shorewood, Ill.) and Jillian Stone (Rockridge HS, Reynolds, Ill.) are next with marks of 87.5 and 88.1, respectively. Stone dropped her average to 83.0 strokes over her last six rounds this fall.

Vikings tie for third in rain-shortened College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Women’s Golf Championships for highest league finish since 2012-13

WEST CHICAGO, Illinois – Inclement weather claimed the third and final day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Women’s Golf Championship on Saturday, October 7 but that didn’t stop Augustana from enjoying its most successful finish since the 2012-13 season. Head Coach Tom Lawrence’s crew finished in a tie for third place with a 36-hole total of 664 (338+326).

The tournament was played at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago, Illinois and Augustana shot 338 on Thursday, October 5 and was in fourth place in the team standings. On Friday, October 6 the Vikings shot 326 and moved into a third place tie with Wheaton at each team had 664. The Thunder went 331 and 333.

Heavy rains in the western suburbs wiped out the third and final day on Saturday, October 7 and the tournament ended after 36 holes instead of 54. Illinois Wesleyan won the team title with a score of 633 (319+314) while Carthage was second with a 653 (329+324). Augustana and Wheaton shared the number three spot with identical scores of 664 and North Central was fifth at 678 (343+335). Carroll took sixth with a 697 (358+339) and Millikin was seventh at 782 (376+406). Elmhurst and North Park did not field complete teams.

Augustana was led by sophomore Melanie Loeffler (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) and senior Jenna Lawrence (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.). Each player shot 163 for the tournament with identical rounds of 82 and 81 and the duo tied for 10th in the individual standings.

Sarah Lyman of Carthage won the medalist honor with a score of 149 (76+73).

Freshman Jillian Stone (Rockridge HS, Reynolds, Ill.) placed 16th with a score of 167 (83+84) and freshman Miranda Sharp (Minooka HS, Shorewood, Ill.) was tied for 19th with a 36-hole total of 171 (91+80). Her 80 on the second day was the lowest score of the tournament for the Vikings.

Sophomore Grace Ludwig (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) had a 187 (100+87) and senior Korina Freidag (Lanark Eastland HS, Lake Carroll, Ill.) shot 189 (93+96).

The last time an Augustana team placed as high as third was in 2012-13 under the direction of then-head coach Ron Standley.

The Vikings will now be off until the spring season begins in March.
