At the age of 18, Jerry left home and worked at various resorts from Florida and Arizona to California then Colorado. In 1973, he married Marilyn Douglas, a hiking friend he met in the Colorado Mountain Club Denver Group. They spent every moment possible in the wide open spaces. They hiked the entire 450-mile Colorado Trail. The couple loved camping, backpacking, and fishing trips. Jerry and Marilyn traveled widely to such places as Japan, Norway, Alaska, New Zealand, and Switzerland. They hiked hut-to-hut in the mountains of Italy and Yugoslavia and biked up and down the hills of Scotland. In the United States, they enjoyed hiking in the Grand Canyon and many other national parks. Still, it is safe to say, they both loved Colorado above all other places.
