Susan L. "Susie" Hughes
Aurora - Susan L. "Susie" Hughes (nee Murphy), age 77, a resident of Aurora, IL, formerly of Aledo and Naperville, IL, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born March 29, 1944 in Galesburg, IL.
Beloved wife of Jerry Hughes, whom she married August 2, 1962, loving mother of Mary (Marcus) Britt of Dayton, MD, Pamela (Wayne) Weaver of Oswego, IL and Rebecca (Chuck) Highland of Aurora, IL, adored grandmother of Katherine Emad, Joseph (Taylor) King and Robin (Edvin) Chinchilla Marcos; Heather (Corey Bownes) Weaver, Adam (Jessica) Weaver and the late Nicholas Weaver; Garrett (Candace) Highland and Kyle Highland, cherished great-grandmother of Emily and Ramzi Emad; Edvin, Sophia and Mario Chinchilla Marcos; Isabella and Jaxon Torres and Eviana Weaver; E'maya and Endia Bownes (coming soon!), devoted daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (nee Brown) Murphy, dear brother of Roger (Carla) Murphy of Aledo, IL and the late Rick (Maralee) Murphy, sister-in-law of Jim (Jane) Hughes of Bettendorf, IA and the late Rosalee (the late Cecil) Karnes and the late Roger Hughes, fond aunt and great-aunt of many. Susan was a kind soul and blessed with many wonderful friendships during her lifetime.
Susan grew up in Aledo, IL, was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and graduated from Aledo High School (Class of 1962). She worked at her family's Ben Franklin store in her youth, and after her children were grown, Susan worked in the Deli at Jewel Foods in Market Meadows Mall in Naperville and later for many years at Marshall Field's/Macy's in the Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, IL.
Susan was a former member and Eucharistic minister at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Naperville. She also was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church and Holy Angels Catholic Church, both in Aurora and Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Sandwich, IL.
A breast cancer survivor, Susan was a volunteer for Reach To Recovery, a program helping people cope with their breast cancer experience. She enjoyed baking, shopping, and most of all, spending time with her family.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 19, 2022, 11:00 AM at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.
Interment was private.
