Nancy S. Darrough

Nancy S. Darrough, age 72, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Aledo, IL, passed away Friday June 24, 2022, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Visitation will be from 1-2 PM Friday July 1, 2022, at the Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo followed immediately by a graveside service in the Aledo cemetery. A memorial fund will be established, and online condolences can be made at fippingerfuneralhome.com.

Nancy was born January 1, 1950, in Springfield, IL. to Donald and Nedra Mason Darrough. She grew up in Aledo, Illinois and graduated from Aledo High School. She attended the University of Illinois graduating in 1972 with a BA in Education.

She began her teaching career in Springfield District #186 in 1972. She earned a Master of Science in Education from Western Illinois University in 1985. She taught Spanish and Language Arts at Washington Middle School, Jefferson Middle School, Franklin Middle School, Southeast and Springfield High school where she taught the majority of her career. Nancy retired in 2005. She loved her students and always enjoyed running into them while out an about in Springfield.

Nancy was active in the Springfield Education Association, the Illinois Education Association, and the NEA where she served on many committees and attending IEA and NEA Representative Assemblies. She fought for the rights of teachers and students during her entire career and was recognized for her strong union support.

She loved to travel and after retirement lived several months of each year in Florida where she enjoyed friends from across the country. She liked reading a good book and meeting friends for a nice dinner.

She is survived by a cousin, Charles Darrough of Sheldon, Il. Her parents preceded her in death.
