Bette L. Gerard, 91 of Aledo, Illinois died Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at Mercer Manor in Aledo.  There are no services or visitation.  Burial is in the Aledo Cemetery.  Memorials may be left to the Mercer County VFW Post 1571.  Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo is in charge of arrangements and online condolences can be made at

She was born November 25, 1928 in Monmouth, IL to William and Roxie Lester Simpkins.  She graduated from Aledo High School in 1947.  She married Albert J. “Skim” Gerard March 25, 1950 in Rock Island, IL.  He died February 8, 2006.

During high school, she worked at the swimming pool during the summer and Stuts Drug Store in the winter.  She was employed at Brown Lynch Scott in Aledo and worked as a nurse’s aide at the Mercer County Hospital.  She was then employed as head cook for the Aledo School District, retiring in 1990.

Bette was a member of Mercer County VFW Post 1571 Auxiliary, Mercer County Hospital Auxiliary and the wife of a U.S. Submarine Veteran WWII.

Survivors include two daughters: Pam (Ed) Long of Marco Island, FL; Gina Gerard of Ashville, NC; 2 grandchildren: Rob (Kelly) Long of Edgington, IL; Tammy Hart of Salem, Iowa; 4 great grandchildren: Amber, Payton, Brandon and Sheridan; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister: Eula and four brothers: Curt, Hayden, Don and George.
