JoAnn M. Good Rice, age 83, of Shokokon, Illinois, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst. She was born May 11, 1937 in Keokuk, Iowa as the only child of George and Hazel (Smith) Lopp. JoAnn was a 1954 graduate of Stronghurst High School.
She married Donald Leroy Good on Dec. 24, 1955 in Stronghurst, and they had six children. He passed away on Oct. 19, 1985. She married Harold Rice of Mt. Clemens, Michigan in August of 1993 in Aledo, Illinois. He passed away in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents, son Paul A. Good and infant grandson Donald P. Good.
JoAnn was survived by a daughter-in-law; Cathy Good, (Paul, deceased), Gladstone, IL, four sons; Steven (Cynthia Fisher), Lyons, CO, Mark (Bambi), Caseyville, IL, Eric (Janice), Galesburg, IL, Darrin (Diana), Lincoln, NE and one daughter; Patrice Good, Iowa City, IA, in addition to nine grandchildren; Jennifer Benge (John), Brian Good (Larisa), Emily Kay, (Matthew), Brittany Good (Kyle Nelson), Autumn Herrera (Manuel), Hannah Good, Samantha Good (Michelle), Jacob Keil (Heather) and Daniel Keil, as well as a joyful abundance of great grandchildren.
In addition to running the household and raising six children, JoAnn worked as a teacher’s aide at New Boston Grade School, nurse’s aide at Mercer County Nursing Home and assistant to activities and physical therapy director at Georgetown Nursing Home (both in Aledo, IL).
JoAnn was a social butterfly and would never hesitate to accept an invitation for an outing. She loved attending sporting events of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed going to family reunions, collecting fossils and gems, attending meetings of rock clubs she helped initiate in Carthage, Aledo and Rock Island, researching family genealogy and especially traveling – throughout the US and to ten countries with her daughter, Patty. She was also active in her churches throughout her life (Aledo United Methodist Church, Carman Methodist Church, and Latter-Day Saints churches in Burlington and Mt. Clemons, MI). JoAnn cherished her involvement with Eastern Star, Red Hats Society, various rock collecting clubs, and volunteering at places such as the Burlington Memorial Hospital and the Nauvoo Temple.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no visitation or services are planned at this time. Interment will be in Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois. The family hopes to have a Celebration of Life in May or June of 2021. A memorial fund has been established, as a gesture of gratitude to the loving staff, for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst.
