Ola Finch turns 99
Ola Finch of Aledo celebrated her 99th birthday on Oct. 3, 2008, at her home at the Mercer County Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 3, 1909 in Apache, Oklahoma to William and Gussie Bigham. Her parents moved to Keithsburg shortly after her birth, where her father farmed most of his life. She married Walter Monroe Finch in 1931 and the couple had two children, Walter P. Finch and Sandra L. Stearns. Walter M. Finch died on April 27, 1998.
Ola lived most of her life in the Keithsburg and Aledo area, a very active community member. Her husband worked as a trucker, railroad depot employee, at the Rock Island Arsenal and even operated a grocery store in Keithsburg. After he retired, the couple became managers at the old Mercer County Nursing Home that was located near the Aledo Airport.
Ola loved doll making, doll dressing and artwork. After moving to Aledo she opened a Doll Hospital, where she made and dressed dolls of all kinds. She authored a Doll Repair Correspondence course, that she eventually sold to a California firm.
She has seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
