Joy Post Office cancellation begins Dec. 1

Joy Post Office has a new officer in charge - Susan Johnson. She’s only been at the post office in Joy for the past few weeks, but December may be a big challenge for her. She has been working for the postal service since 1996, and prior to taking the position in Joy worked as a supervisor over 34 carriers in Rock Island.

This year’s postal cancellation was one of 22 entries competing for the honor. It was designed by Alee Nylin, a junior at Westmer. The winning entry was chosen by a vote of Joy Post Office customers.

Nylin’s design was simple, yet elegent. Four candy cane type candles, with the flame glowing in the background, two holiday ornaments and a ribbon rolling through the design make up this year’s entry.

Nylin said she first drew the entry in pencil, then put ink over it. The design took her two days to complete.

Alee is the daughter of Dee and Darin Nylin of Keithsburg.

Johnson plans to mount the remaining entries and display them at the post office during the month of December. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Anyone wishing to have holiday greetings mailed out from the Joy Post Office can send the letters to Joy Postmaster, PO Box 9998, Joy, IL 61260.

Joy Postmaster Paula Rath, who is working right now as officer in charge at the Sherrard Post Office, said last December she cancelled around 11,000 Christmas greetings.
