Staff reports

Ken and Imogene Kness McFate, former Aledo residents, celebrate d their 58th wedding anniversary with a special dinner at Churchills Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Mo. on Jan 27, 2009. When Churchills was established in the early 1980s at the then Hilton Inn their late son, Daniel E. McFate was the Hilton food & beverage manager.

The couple married in Imogene's hometown Viola, on a snowy day not unlike their anniversary day. While a student at Marycrest College in Davenport, Imogene was a member of a five  piano concert group. After moving to Columbia, Mo. she received her bachelor of science  education degree from the University of Missouri. She then taught  pre-schoolers at the First Baptist Church for 19 years. During that time she was active in her professional society AEYC, in mothersingers and in church choir.

Ken grew up on the farm where he was born near LeClaire, Iowa, four miles from the birthplace of (Wm. F.) Buffalo Bill Cody. He is a member of the Scott County Iowa Settler Descendants Association and was a navigator in the US Army Air Corp during WW II.

After five years in the Engineering Department at Iowa State, Ken accepted a position as professor of agricultural engineering at the University of Missouri in 1956. He is a life member and fellow in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers headquartered in Michigan. After retiring from the University in 1986 he became president of the Columbia-based National Food & Energy Council, which he managed from 1975 to 1992. The primary focus of the council was to educate the public and political leaders on the critical interdependence of energy and world food supplies.

"Sadly," Ken says, "the congressional edict on fuel efficient vehicles fell by the wayside for three decades."

Ken and Imogene are 53-year members of Columbia's First Presbyterian Church, where both have served as Deacon and Elder. They have two daughters, Kathy of New York City and Shari of Olathe, Kan. Their daughter-in-law Diane lives in Corona, Calif. They also have three grandchildren, Chris, Kelly and Dylan.
