This past week the Mercer County Republicans celebrated the Grand Opening of the new Republican Headquarters by inviting residents to a cook-out. Although the evening was a rainy one the grand opening drew a large crowd. Aledo Meat Market provided a nice dinner for those in attendance and several door prizes were given away. Even the little kids got in on the action.

The Republican Headquarters is located just off of Highway 17 next door to Landmark Landscaping. Each month the Central Committee meeting will be held on the third Thursday and everyone is welcome to attend.

After the dinner the Republican Central Committee meeting was held with 30-35 people attending. The party discussed and planned for the upcoming events in the Mercer County area such as the Rhubarb Festival, where the candidates will be selling elephant ears and soda.

It was agreed that for every elephant ear sold the party will donate $1 to the Aledo Food Pantry. The party candidates will also be marching in the Keithsburg and Joy parades this year.

At the meeting the party also discussed the possibility of hosting a Texas Hold 'em tournament. With the new office space available for events many of the attendees had ideas of how the party can get more people involved.

The Young Republicans at the meeting also announced that this Thursday, May 27 they will be hosting an event called “Politics On Tap” at Legends in Aledo. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Congressional candidate Bobby Schilling.

They will be discussing the issue of how a candidate's faith affects his or her life in public office. The Young Republican group has invited everyone to attend.

The next meeting to be held at the new Republican Headquarters will be held on June 17 at 7 p.m.
