Viola Public Library's third Mystery Dinner "Mystery in the Pumpkin Patch" is set for Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Viola Presbyterian Church. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the meal and play to start at 6:30 p.m. Menu consists of four courses: appetizers (vegetables with ranch dip); fruit medley (chopped pears and peaches); main course (chicken breast with baked potato and green beans); dessert (pumpkin cake). Tickets are available at the library for $7.50 each with a limit of 75 tickets available.

The play centers around children caught having a Halloween party without parents being home. One child is found asleep in the nearby pumpkin patch. The police chief and a rookie officer are called in to question the children and find out what is going on with the assistance of Mr. Whipster from Child Protective Services.

The play was written by Linda Engels of Viola. Tom Mulder plays the police chief and Darcy Gustafson his rookie officer. Other roles include Bob Millikan as the social worker, Mr. Whipster, who finds the children running amok; Sarah Mathis as the investigative reporter breaking the scandal; and the following children: Curt Miller, Chris Schultz, Charlie Schultz, Abby Pope, Maggie Pope, Brett Pope, and Amber Luker.

This year an Aluratek Libre eBook Reader PRO will be raffled. Tickets are available at the library for $1 each or 6 for $5. You need not be present to win. There will be other raffle items the night of the dinner and play which you must be present to win. Proceeds from the dinner go to purchase library materials, shelving, or supplies. “Mystery in the Pumpkin Patch” is sponsored by Book Buddies and RNA Chapter 20066.

Other events for Book Buddies include a book on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Viola Threshers Reunion. The sale starts at 8 a.m. Hardback and paperback books for children through adults will be available to purchase for a donation. You can also purchase a ticket to the mystery dinner or the raffle that day from members of the Book Buddies.

That same morning, the library’s RNA Chapter 20066 is serving breakfast from 6 – 9 a.m. at the Threshers grounds by Keith’s Pond. They will serve biscuits with homemade sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, coffee and orange drink. Cost is donation. They will be located in the Viola Fire Department booth on the Threshers grounds. Profit from the breakfast goes to the Viola Threshers Reunion. Donations for the breakfast have been received from Sharon Esslinger of Country/ReMax; Geneta Lee of Country Insurance; Farmer’s State Bank; and members of the Book Buddies and RNA Chapter 20066.
