United's Augusta Chandler will continue her academic and basketball career at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.

Chandler signed an NJCAA letter of intent to attend the school and play basketball for coach Michael Bailey's women's basketball team.

Chandler will join a group of at least five returners and seven newcomers to the storied Charger basketball program, which is only a couple of years removed from three straight trips to the NCAA tournament in Arizona. Bailey was excited about his recruiting class.?“We’re not done yet,” Bailey said. “The most important thing is that we’ve filled our needs. We really needed to improve our ball-handling situation and we’ve done that. We’ve added another shooter to the mix along with the kids we’ve got coming back. We’ve also added some good front line help. And we now hope to establish a post presence.”?After a couple of years of struggle, the Chargers have their best recruiting class in some time, including players from Galesburg, Stark County, Abingdon and East Peoria.

“We should be pretty competitive,” Bailey said.??Bailey's quotes?"(Augusta) fits in very well with what she does. ... She is a hard worker. ... I noticed her at a softball game. ... This is a big day today that starts here and ends up in East Peoria. ... We have all the pieces and depth to get back where we want to be. ... You have to be physical and guard somebody. She is going to create matchup problems. She can guard inside and be a shooter for us offensively. ... She brings a lot of length for us."??United principal Amy Schmitz's quotes?"We are very proud of Augusta."??Augusta's quotes?"I like to be close to family. ... I will study agriculture. I'd like to get in on the finance end of it. ... I wanted to play basketball. ... I'd like to transfer to WIU. ... I have been with (retiring United coach Dennis Mann) for four years. I wish him luck in retirement. I am going to miss him."??Courtney Chandler's (Augusta's mother) quotes?"We are proud she is going to play. We are happy for her. ... I'd like to thank all the people that came today. (About 40 people were in attendance). "??Dennis Mann's quotes?"She had a really good career. The college game is more physical, she has never shied away from contact."??Chandler's stats?22.2 percent 3-point shooting, 65.4 percent foul shooting, 54.8 percent 2-point shooting, 169 rebounds, 7.6 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game, 20 blocks, 29 assists, 56 steals all in 29 games during her senior year.
