The June 5th will open with James Curnow’s “Fanfare and Flourishes” – a piece based on Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s (1634-1704) “Te Deum.” and commissioned for the 1991 European Brass Band Championships held in Rotterdam, Holland. A classic arrangement of “Hollywood!” by Warren Barker contains songs that are cinema classics. Included is the rousing march from “Star Trek” followed by an all-time favorite, “Moon River” that has featured solos for the alto saxophone and trumpet. Then comes a bright Latin arrangement of “Never on Sunday” followed by the exciting march from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. Much more will follow including the annual “Salute to Peoria High Schools” that will involve some 50 local high school musicians.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis will serve as the guest emcee for the concert and Dr. Laura Schelly will be the featured vocalist. Each week the band features an outstanding vocal soloist and instrumental soloist or section of the band. Laura has been a frequent vocal soloist in shows and concerts throughout Central Illinois.
The Peoria Municipal Band was formed in 1937 through the efforts of Local 26 of the American Federation of Musicians and interested citizens. Prior to 1937 the band was a professional municipal band complete with management and "Soloists of National Reputation". Current band members come from all walks of life; many are currently music teachers in the local schools. They are selected by audition and then commit to a full season of rehearsals and performance. Hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed their music since 1937. Today, with the support of the city, the band continues the long-standing tradition of excellence in music.
