Harold Mills Turns 80

Harold Mills of rural New Boston will celebrate his 80th birthday on July 6, 2011. His parents, Martin and Gazelle, were living in Aledo but moved to Des Moines, Iowa when Harold was about six weeks old. The family moved back to Joy in 1942 and he graduated from Joy High School in 1949. In 1953, he graduated from Iowa State University, spent two years in the U.S. Army, and then returned to the family farm in Eliza Township.

    On February 7, 1954, Harold married Shirley Allen in Lucas, Iowa. They have been on the farm for 55 years. Harold served on the Mercer County Farm Bureau board and on the Farm Service Board for several years, and is currently a drainage commissioner for the Upper Bay Island District. He is a faithful member of the Buffalo Prairie Church, and has served in many capacities there.

    Harold and Shirley have four children, Kathleen Perrine of Davenport; Valerie (Scott) Thorne of Parkersburg, Iowa; Brian (Karen) Mills of New Boston, and Tim (Sally) Mills of Marshalltown, Iowa. There are eight grandchildren, Kevin (Rachel) Perrine, Allison Perrine, Gwendolyn and Eli Thorne, Joanna, Doug, Jared and Lauren Mills and one step-granddaughter, Rachael Thorne. Son-in-law Harvey Perrine died in 2005.
