Joy All School Reunion

The Joy All School Reunion will be held on Sunday July 17, 2011 at the V.F.W. Hall located at 106 SW 3rd Ave. in Aledo. The meal will be served at 1:00 p.m. There will be three food choices 1) three pieces of chicken at $9.75, 2) catfish at $10.50, and 3) roast beef at $9.75, all will be served with a potato, vegetable and salad bar. Those attending are requested to RSVP with a check made out to VFW #1571 and food choice to Marilyn J. Mix, 109 W. 2nd St., Coal Valley, Ill. 61240-9327 by July 11.

The first commencement exercises were held in May 1899, with four graduates. Over the years, the Joy School consolidated and expanded, becoming Joy Community High School District #68 in 1939.

The last graduation was held in May 1960, with 26 persons in the final graduating class. In the period from 1899 to 1960, there were approximately 870 graduates. The class of 1956, with 37 graduates, was the largest. Three people comprised the class of 1904. There were no graduating classes in 1901, 1903 and 1909.

After the last graduating class of Joy High School in 1960, the Westmer Community Unit #203 was formed.
