Two Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival regulars are going to be musical guests on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor airing Saturday, May 8.

Pianist Dick Hyman and trumpeter Randy Sandke will be performing some of Bix’s music on the popular radio show.

Some of the songs will be from Dick Hyman’s new CD Thinking About Bix. It’s a recording of definitive performances of Bix Beiderbecke's five original piano pieces, plus new Hyman arrangements and improvisations on classic Beiderbecke recordings.

Hyman and Sandke have been part of the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival since 2006.

Randy Sandke will be returning to the 2010 Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival on July 22-25 in Davenport. He’ll be playing with jazz banjoist Cynthia Sayer & Sparks Fly.

A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor airs locally at 5 p.m. on Saturday on WVIK 90.3 FM, KUNI 90.9 FM, and KSUI 91.7 FM, and on stations across the country. Find a radio station near you or listen live at

About Dick Hyman

While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Dick Hyman has also investigated ragtime and the earliest periods of jazz and has researched and recorded the piano music of Bix Beiderbecke, Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake and Fats Waller. Other solo recordings include the music of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington.

He has well over 100 albums recorded under his own name and many more in support of other artists.  He has served as composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for eleven Woody Allen films. In 1995 Mr. Hyman was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame of the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies.

About Randy Sandke

Randy Sandke has performed at festivals, clubs, and concerts around the world, along with playing on several movie soundtracks and on Broadway. Randy has recorded over twenty albums as a leader. Sandke has remained strongly associated with swing music, and he is an authority on the music of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke. He has written arrangements for Sting, Elton John, the King of Thailand, and transcriptions for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
